ATTENTION

To lure potential victims into the trap, attackers use a technique called SPOOFING, in which the attacker uses Voice over IP (VoiceIP) technology to call the victim, taking over the contact information without the consent of the institution or of the natural person. It only requires knowledge of the phone number, some of which are publicly available.

There are tools on the internet that provide spoofing services, usually with a fee per minute of conversation. However, attackers do not always rely on these services and have the necessary resources to create a similar tool.

For your safety, please, consider the following:

  • The bank will never ask users to provide sensitive data (personal data, authentication, or bank cards) by phone, following calls made by the company. Avoid providing data over the phone!
  • Always check the authenticity of calls from an authority or company through a separate communication channel, especially if you are asked for sensitive data
  • Report such calls to the Bank to draw attention as quickly as possible to new scenarios used by attackers
  • If you have provided card data, it is important to contact the Bank immediately to block any unauthorized transactions
  • If you have been injured, file a complaint with the Police (physically or at petitii@politiaromana.ro) and notify DNSC (phone 1911 or alerts@dnsc.ro)
  • Last but not least, help spread these warnings to other users, to reduce the chances that such fraud attempts will be successful!

Recommendations from the authorities:

  • The Romanian Police, the National Cyber Security Directorate and the Romanian Association of Banks warn of the risk of fraud through fake phone calls (spoofed)
